Discipleship Family

Following the Right Directions

The following devotion is excerpted from our brand new devotional, Faith Forward Family Devotional. Gather your family together to remind them from the book of John that only Jesus can save us.
XO, Ruth

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
JOHN 14:6

Have you ever had to ask for directions? Maybe you were looking for someone’s house or you were trying to find a store. Maybe you were on vacation and couldn’t find the right street. Everyone can get lost. That’s why we need to be careful to follow the right directions!

One day Jesus was telling His disciples about heaven. The Bible says it’s going to be like everything Adam and Eve had but even better! Jesus told them it was like a house with many rooms. It is a place where God lives with us. It is a place where we are together again. There is no more pain, sickness, tears, war, or hunger.

And then Jesus told them He was going to leave them soon. But not forever. He was preparing a place for them, a place to belong, to finally be at home forever!

Who wouldn’t want to go where Jesus was talking about! But how do we get there? That is the question the disciples wanted to know. They needed directions. And so do we.

Jesus told us He is the way, the truth, and the life. Coming to Him, believing in Him, and following Him is the only way to being with God forever! Jesus is not a way; He is the way. Like a road sign pointing us in the right direction, Jesus pointed us toward real life and everlasting life.

Key Idea: Jesus is not a way; Jesus is the way. Many people think that if they are good and try not to sin, God will accept them. But only Jesus can save us. Only by believing in what He has done for us on the cross will we be forgiven and accepted by God the Father. We can be sure that when we follow Jesus, we will be with Him forever.

Here are a few questions to think about and discuss with your family:

• Describe a time when you had to ask for directions.

• What do you think is going to be the best part of heaven someday?

• How can people be sure they are heading in the right direction?

Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father, we praise You for saving us through Your Son, Jesus. He is the only way to heaven, the only way to You. Fill us with Your joy and hope, knowing that we are going to be with You forever someday. In Jesus’ name, amen.
