Marriage is hard! {Can I get an “amen”?!}

My husband and I are currently in a season of 4 small children, crazy work hours, and not a lot of sleep. Factors that, alone, add a lot of stress to a marriage, but combined, can become toxic. I know that many of you can relate because you, too, are in this season of young children, challenging careers, and pressing responsibilities. But every time I express the challenges of marriage during the little years, someone else reminds me that marriage is hard in their season, too!

Marriage can be beautiful and joy-filled, but every relationship comes with its own set of challenges.

One of the most important things we can do for our marriage is to pray for it. We must be praying for our spouse and our relationship! 

God has told us in His Word to come to Him at all times, in every situation, and with confidence, pouring out our hearts to Him.

Friends, “this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).

I don’t see prayer as a magic pill, and it’s certainly not a demand, but when we yield our hearts to the Lord in prayer, when we are open and vulnerable, He begins to change us. And when we begin to change — whether it’s our attitudes, our actions, or our outlooks — our circumstances also begin to change.

So how do we pray according to the will of God? One of the best places to start is by praying His Word.

I have made praying the Scriptures for my husband a habit. It has had such a profound impact on me and him, that I compiled some of these Scripture prayers into a book to share with others. Today, I’d like to share 4 additional Scriptures I pray over my marriage and for my husband and me.

 4 Scriptures to Pray For Your Marriage

“Lord, please remind _____ and me that our love for each other is to be patient and kind, not envious or boastful and certainly not arrogant. Help us not to be rude to each other or selfish, insisting on our own way, and may our marriage not be marked by anger or resentment. Rather, help us to be slow to become angry and quick to forgive, not keeping a record of hurts in our relationship. By the power of Your Spirit, may our love bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things. Like your love for us, and for the sake of Your Name, God, may our love never end” (Based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ESV).

 

Lord, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents, may _____ and I both watch what You do and then do it.  Mostly what You do is love us. Teach us and strengthen us to keep company with You and learn a life of love. Open our eyes to see how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Help us, Lord, to love one another like that (Ephesians 5:1-2 MSG).

 

Lord, may _____ and I be completely humble and gentle. By Your Spirit, help us to be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of Your love and ours. Show us how to steadily pour ourselves out for each other in acts of love. Help us, Lord, to make every effort to preserve the unity the Spirit has already created, with peace binding us together. We want to be quick to mend fences, Lord, bearing with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2-3 MSG, VOICE, NLT, NIV).

 

O, Lord, may _____ and I not merely say that we love each other or talk about love only as an idea or a theory. Rather, help us to show the truth by our actions, making love our true way of life. Lord, we want to live in the pattern of gracious love (1 John 3:18 NLT, VOICE).

 

I sincerely pray that these Scripture prayers will help you grow in your relationship with the Lord and with your spouse, and I pray that God will use these prayers in a powerful way in your marriage!
