Seeking Wisdom For Your Marriage

Seeking Wisdom for Your Marriage

Seeking Wisdom For Your Marriage

If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:4-6 (KJV)

Over the years we have found more and more truth to the nuggets of wisdom tucked away in Proverbs 2. While we love the entire chapter, the particular verses 4-6 have really resonated with us over the years in regard to seeking wisdom for our marriage. The first time we read these verses together was at a college fellowship group when we were engaged. We both hung on the words in these verses and couldn’t shake the pure joy we had when we realized that the only thing we should be seeking after in this life is Him.

In verse 4 it talks about seeking wisdom as silver, searching for it as a hidden treasure. We don’t know about you, but those words invite us into a never-ending adventure that leads us straight to heart of Jesus, and in turn to the heart of our Father. And this place, at the heart of our Father, is where we go when we are seeking wisdom in our marriage.

Like many of you, over the years we’ve been faced with some really hard decisions.

Should we join the military?

Are we really living out God’s will for our marriage?

Should we buy a house?

How can we become debt-free?

Should we find a new church?

And so on, and so on…

All of these questions and many, many more have come across our minds and lips in prayer. And eventually, as we seek the answer to these questions, lead us straight to the Bible and the heart of our Father. We have found this adventure of treasure seeking to be one of the most dynamic and fun aspects of our 15-year marriage. It has given us the wisdom, strength, and excitement to stay close to God and close to one another.

And when we find Him, his wisdom is right there to be beheld. In verses 5-6 the Bible reminds us that once we seek God with all of our heart, we will find the fear of the Lord and all of His wisdom right along with it. Not only is it exciting, fun and challenging to seek the Lord, but the benefits far outweigh the cost! We’ve found that the closer we get to God the easier it is to honor our marriage covenant in every aspect. We’ve also found that when we seek the Lord together that He not only changes our own heart — but the heart of our spouse as well. It’s like double for our trouble!

We encourage each of you who have spouses willing to read the Bible and pray to really make the effort to keep the margin in your lives to maintain that part of your marriage covenant. Seeking wisdom for your marriage not only benefits your personal life but gives you the ability to share your newly found knowledge with others, furthering God’s Kingdom! What a blessing to all, especially our God who in the process is glorified!

We pray that you and your spouse enjoy the adventurous treasure hunt together as you begin seeking wisdom for your marriage!

In Christ’s Great Service,
