5 Scriptures for a Broken Heart
God promises us that He will heal, restore, and redeem the brokenhearted. Perhaps as a family, you’ve experienced grief from the loss of a child, the death of a close family member, or maybe the loss of a job. Regardless of the details, the journey through having a broken heart is often the same. We are thankful for God’s Word and go-to Scriptures to help in times like these. Here are just a few of our favorites.
5 Scriptures for a Broken Heart
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
This scripture is a go-to for many areas of life, especially for the person experiencing a broken heart. God encourages us through this scripture and reminds us that He knows the plans He has for you, even in the midst of grief. Not only does He know His plans for you, but He also has your best interests at heart. Isn’t that comforting?
God will give you rest.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
Rest is often the last thing you get when you’re going through a difficult season. Your days are often met with more emotional rollercoaster rides and the nights seem even longer. Remember that God wants to give you rest, especially when you’re weary and burdened.
God promises no more pain.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. (Revelation 21:4)
In the moment or season of experiencing a broken heart, you may find yourself questioning how long must you endure? This verse is the perfect reminder that He will wipe every tear from your eye and He will be with you through it all.
God heals the brokenhearted.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)
This scripture speaks straight to the brokenhearted, promising that our wounds will be bound up. Something interesting about the words “to bind” in the biblical definition, means “to forbid by an indisputable authority.” This means when satan, the world, or your own emotions seek to keep you bound by your grief, God is saying give it to Him and it will be no more.
God is close to the brokenhearted.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
The Psalms speak a great deal about the brokenhearted, being down, and/or being pressed. Quite possibly because David, the author, knew a great deal about being brokenhearted. He reminds us in this scripture that God is close to you in your most difficult times. You can depend on His love, grace, and mercy to carry you through.
In our 22 years of marriage, we have experienced heartbreak and grief. It is only through the power of God’s Word, prayer, and support from our brothers and sisters in Christ, we have overcome. Our prayer is that you will feel God’s love through your season of grief and allow it to bring you closer together as a couple.
