When You Need a Refuge: A Playlist

How do you seek refuge? Music has the ability to change our perspective, our vision and even our mood. The next time you are feeling stressed, anxious or overloaded as a parent, try some of our favorites listed here to bring you closer to the heart of God and His heart for your family. It was a particularly bad day. Tempers flared. Tears spilled. Angry words were spoken.

It was on that day I decided I needed a refuge: a musical one. I created a playlist that would speak God’s beauty and truth to my heart on days that spin in turmoil. A calm space to hide, if only on the inside, in the midst of life’s upheaval.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble,” the Psalmist says. “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea . . .” God is my refuge, on good days and bad. But sometimes I need some help getting to God. Sometimes I don’t have the mental space to pray or the margin to stop and regroup. Sometimes I just have to keep doing the next thing.

But in the midst of the simple annoyances of children bickering to the larger trials of family drama or lost jobs, I have found some songs that speak peace to my heart and help me see God as my refuge and strength.

Here are some of mine. What songs do you turn to when you need some refuge?
