In Search of Wisdom for Marriage

Godly role models.  Titus 2 women.  A multitude of counselors.  All relationships every woman would be blessed to have in her life, but not every woman does.  When I got saved, I walked the Christian life alone.   However, I was desperate for truth and I had a deep hunger for wisdom because I no longer wanted to walk in the ways of this world. Quite frankly, I had had enough of my self; my ways, my thoughts, my plans.  Doing life my way led me on a path of self-destruction.

I’ll never forget that moment as my quest for wisdom began…

It was over 18 years ago when I sat alone in my one room apartment when I thought, “How on earth do I grow in Christ?  The Bible is a big book!  Where do I begin?”

Soon I became like a sponge soaking up the Word of God even though many times I didn’t understand what I read.  As a new Believer, reading the book of Revelation could be quite overwhelming!

In Search of Wisdom for Marriage

This same hunger I had for my life also rang true in my heart for my future marriage.  I wanted to marry a man who was sold out for Jesus Christ, but while I desired this, I soon realized that I needed (and wanted) to become a woman who was sold out for Christ, as well.

My quest to be that woman continued as I sat at the Lord’s feet.  It’s where I received an unorthodoxed education in theology, much like when Mary sat at Jesus’ feet in Luke 10:39. Back in those days, you wouldn’t have found women sitting at the feet of a Rabbi, but Mary did because she was so devoted to Christ.  Jesus went on to commend Mary for her devotion to Him when He said,

“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”  Luke 10:42

Many years have past since the beginnings of my new found Christian faith (and then a new marriage), but one thing remains- I still want a marriage that reflects the Creator of marriage.  But, in order for this take place I need to continually sit at the Lord’s feet; the base of widsom.

The more of the Bible you know, the more discernment and wisdom you’ll have. God’s not slack in giving us wisdom, all we need to do is ask and seek Him. His Word contains all of the guidance and direction needed for a thriving marriage. Prayerfully, we as wives will seek God’s ways instead of our ways or the ways of the culture.

Even though I didn’t have a multitude of counselors helping me out and guiding me in life, I did have my Bible! I quickly learned to apply Psalm 1:1-2 to my life by not listening to those who didn’t have a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2

Who are you turning to for marital advice?

Do they walk in the ways of the Lord?

Do they have a God-honoring marriage?

Don’t have any role models or Titus 2 women in your life?  No worries.  Turn to the Bible and you’ll find them there.  This is what I did and it’s made all the difference in my marriage!

Live a poured out life for Christ,

  1. If I may respond from a male perspective…what a lovely post!

Certainly the marriage advice we get from our culture says nothing so much as a reinforcement of the thought that culture is what grows in a petri dish, or an unwashed gym shoe.

  2. There is no other place that I could turn for help and for wisdom than my bible. It’s my source of wisdom and strength. These 3 questions are important: Who are you turning to for marital advice?
Do they walk in the ways of the Lord? Do they have a God-honoring marriage?. I will be considering them every time I look for help or counseling. Great article, thanks for sharing and encourage me.

  3. Hi Jolene,

Thank you for another wonderful post. I absolutely love reading and listening to you (your podcasts). Your wisdom is refreshing and encouraging. I am doing my best to push away the advice and false wisdom of the flesh and revel in the wisdom of the Word. You are my Titus 2 “friend.” I mean that in the most non-creepy way possible. Your posts and podcasts have helped me in my marriage more than anyone else, and second only to the Lord. I don’t want to get all sappy on you, but I thought it was important for you to know what kind of impact your ministry is having on women, and me specifically.

    Be blessed by His grace,
    Kelly

  4. Wow, Kelly, I’m completely humbled by your words. And no, I don’t view what you’ve said in a creepy way! 🙂 All credit and glory goes to the Lord. He give us the ability to breathe and it is Him who gives us wisdom. Just continue seeking Him asking Him for it, my friend. He’ll give it to you!
