3 Truths (+ your Green Light) to Finally be Consistent with Family Worship

Do you dream of beginning to worship as a family at home and have no idea how to begin? Devotional time together is much less complicated than you realize. Consider this your jump start!!You know family worship is important.

You want to do it — ideally.

But

  • you’re not sure how
  • you’re super busy
  • your kids are different ages
  • your spouse isn’t involved
  • you can’t seem to be consistent
  • (what else would you add to the list?)

Our family has been in seasons where all 5 applied to us. Consistently getting in God’s Word together as a family has been a struggle over the year. What I’ve finally realized, though, after all of these years, is part of my failure in family worship stemmed from wrong thinking, and I see so many other parents struggling with these same ideas.

Though certainly not exhaustive, here are 3 truths (plus a green light – GO!) to help you get started and stay consistent with family worship in the days and months ahead. (Plus, I have a free gift for you! Read to the end to grab yours.)

Family worship doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.

I used to plan elaborate family devotions with an activity, craft, service project, and more. While those activities can be beneficial, expecting to include them every day kept us from family worship entirely. I didn’t have time to plan all of those add-ons, and we rarely had the time to implement them.

For most people, the more complicated we make things, the less likely we are to follow through.

Remember :: Family worship doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.

Family worship doesn’t have to be long to be effective.

Family worship doesn’t need to take an hour — or even a half hour, for that matter. Of course there will be times when your time together runs longer, but on the day-to-day, expect to keep your time in the Word together an age-appropriate length of time.

If your kids are young, 5 minutes may be enough. As they’re older, aim for a 10-15 minute time of daily worship at home. You can always add a family night for longer topics or more involved activities, but daily consistency and time in the Word as a family is our goal here. Be realistic and think sustainability. I am encouraged when I remember :: 5 minutes in the Word is better than no time in the Word!

Remember :: Family worship doesn’t have to be long to be effective.

Family worship doesn’t have to be done at the same time every day.

Yep, you heard that right. Picking a set time certainly does help a lot of families. However, we’ve found that due to an ever-changing work schedule for my husband, picking one time to engage in family worship means our plans will be derailed before we even begin. One thing that has helped us is to identify optimal times to be in God’s Word together and then choosing one of those times to follow through with worship together.

We all know that when we wait until we feel like doing something or if we wait until we think our kids are ready, we may never start and we certainly won’t gain any consistency. Don’t wait until you feel like worshipping together. Plan a few optimal times in your day. Many moms find dinner to be a good choice, others prefer breakfast. Other families find bedtime, after school or during lunch to be the best choice.  If you can’t make one set time work, know which times will work. Keep in mind, you’re not aiming for an hour — 5-15 minutes is enough! Find a workable time for your situation and seek to be consistent.

That’s right. Now it’s time to start.

So many of the devotionals I’ve picked up in the past either skimped on God’s Word or loaded up on extra activities. In short, they just weren’t the right fit for our family. The aim of this plan, however, is to keep time in the Word and worship simple and doable. Grab your guide here.
