Blessing Your Spouse with the Gift of Communication

Do you talk to your spouse about everything? One gift you can give each other is a commitment to always strengthen and grow your marriage... and communication is a big part of that! Come learn how to bless with your words and willingness to work things out.

In marriage it can be difficult to figure out the perfect gift to give your spouse. Whether that gift is time, a sentimental gift, or a home-cooked meal, it can be tough trying to get creative and stay on budget. Whether it be a “just because” gift or a gift for Christmas, we are always searching for deep and meaningful ways to bless one another as husband and wife. This year we have decided that there is only one gift we want to continually focus on giving one another: The gift of communication.

What exactly is the gift of communication? Well here is how we look at it: The gift of communication means that you will listen to and talk to your spouse about anything that comes your way in marriage. And when we say anything, we mean anything. This means the good, the bad, and the ugly. Because they will all come up at some point. And in order to get through it you both must be willing to be honest with one another, listen to one another (even when it hurts), respond to one another (even when it hurts), and forgive one another.

Today we want to chat about three of the reasons you should bless you spouse with the gift of communication today and every day. You’ll find the reasons below will bless any marriage at any stage.

3 Reasons to Bless Your Spouse With the Gift of Communication

1. Communication builds trust

One of the greatest outcomes of communication in our marriage has been the foundation and continued growth of trust. When someone is honest with you, listens to you, responds to your thoughts, and forgives you; a natural bond of trust is built. We have been through many different challenges over the last 17+ years of our marriage and communication has helped us to continue to trust each other through it all.

2. Communication builds intimacy.

Could your marriage use a boost in the intimacy department? Communication can help! While we’ve come upon bumps in the road in both physical and spiritual intimacy, we’ve always been able to get back on track by communicating with one another! Has it been easy? Nope. But that’s okay. We are in this covenant of marriage for the long haul and are willing to do what it takes to make it work. We have been able to build a strong bond of both physical and spiritual intimacy simply by honoring the gift of communication.

3. Communication helps you forgive.

Forgiveness is not an easy thing for most people. But one thing we’ve found over the years is that by communicating with both God and one another, we’ve learned to forgive one another (and ourselves) quickly. We know that by talking about God’s love for us and our love for each other that there is no conflict we can’t work through.

While the gift of communication is not an easy one to cultivate; it is one of the best life-long gifts you can give one another. God created marriage to be a lifelong commitment. In order to fulfill that commitment, communicating well with our spouse is a non-negotiable. If we want to continuously grow a better marriage, no time for playing the blame game or making up excuses, we have to roll up our sleeves and do the work. And the best part? Although the work is hard, this heart-work will pay off better than any monetary job could compensate you for.

What are you waiting for? Give your spouse the gift of communication today. You’ll be glad you did!
