3 Reasons to Study the Bible as a Couple

Do you and your spouse study the Bible together? Or perhaps you desire to and just haven’t made the time. Over the years we have had countless emails from our readers over at Fulfilling Your Vows™ asking us for methods and ways to study the Bible as a couple. However, a question we’re asked the most is: Why is it important to study God’s Word as a couple?

There are quite a few benefits of studying the Bible together as a couple. Today we are going to share why studying the Bible as a couple is one of the greatest gifts you can give your marriage.

3 Reasons to Study the Bible as a Couple

3 Reasons to Study the Bible as a Couple

1. It allows you and your spouse to hear God together.

One of the greatest assets we have in Christian marriage is the Bible. It is the framework for everything holy and good. The Bible gives us the ability to dig deep into our own heart and make the necessary changes to have a heart more like Christ. God’s Word not only helps us to strengthen our character, it also helps us hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. And this, friends, is a huge part of a healthy Christ-focused marriage.

The voice of the Holy Spirit is the only way we can be certain we are living according to our convictions. The Holy Spirit will give us the wisdom we need to be the best spouse (and person) we can by showing us how to approach every situation in life. By studying God’s Word with our spouse we are ensuring that we are both hearing His voice together and that creates a spiritual bond like no other.

2. It creates spiritual intimacy that will strengthen your marriage.

Spiritual intimacy between a Christian husband and wife can only be created through a bond with Christ. Studying the Bible together gives God an inroad to your hearts to create a strong relationship with Him and one another; a three fold cord that cannot easily be broken.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. -Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)

Spiritual intimacy lead us into increased physical intimacy as well as increased mental intimacy. Studying the Bible together will give you and your spouse the tools you need to create a strong spiritual bond and trust bond like nothing else can. Increased spiritual intimacy in your marriage is directly related to a more fulfilling marriage because you are both putting Christ in the center.

3. It helps keep your heart pure before God and your spouse.

There is nothing worse than being in sin. The feeling of conviction can be overwhelming. No one we know wants to sin against God nor their spouse. But if we are not keeping God’s Word at the center, it is easy to fall into the trap of sin. Studying the Bible with your spouse not only helps keep your heart in right standing with God, it also helps keep your heart pure toward your spouse. Through studying the Bible you allow God to speak to your heart and He will always love you as He helps you confront your sin and give you a clear plan of action to overcome it. If you and your spouse are both doing this imagine how quickly your relationship will flourish!
