5 Devotional Tools for Busy Moms

Being a mom is busy! It leaves little room for personal endeavors, let alone the necessity of spending extended time in God's word. So how can we make time soaking in Scripture a priority, and make sure it takes precedence in our days? Here are 5 of our favorite resources to do just that!I creep down the stairs, careful to step over the squeaky step. It’s 6 a.m. and I head straight for the coffee pot. I choose my favorite green flowered mug from the cupboard and pour a fragrant cup of coffee. With any luck I’ll get a chance to sit down and enjoy my coffee in a quiet house while the kids still sleep. I love a little time just to myself to read scripture, journal, or read a book I’m in the midst of before the rush of the day begins. I reach for the sugar bowl and freeze.

A cry breaks the silent morning. My toddler is up.

It seems like no matter what time I choose, my little one makes that her time to rise as well. The time may even vary day to day, but it seems like she can sense the fact I opened my eyes and can’t wait to join her mama as the new day begins.

It’s morning like these—that happen more often than not—that I need an easy way to spend time with God. I usually spend time with him while my baby munches Cheerios or flips through board books by my side. For now, gone are the days of more extensive study. Sometimes I need an app on my phone to read scripture while holding a child who does not yet want to be put down. Or listen to an audio devotional while fixing breakfast. Or to read from a prayer book because I don’t have the quiet enough to form my own thoughts.

I’ve turned to the following tools over the past year of sleepless nights and early mornings of life with a newborn—now toddler—to assist my devotional life. I don’t feel guilty if it doesn’t happen some days or that it doesn’t look the way it used to. But I sure am happy technology not only has the capacity to make life easier but enrich it too!

Good Morning Girls

This is a website with Bible reading plans and journals to go along with the study. Good Morning Girls groups are all over the world and these studies are in 18 languages!! Courtney Joseph, the founder, also blogs topically through the Bible reading you are following to further dive into certain topics.

She Reads Truth

Essentially, this is a website with Bible reading plans and devotionals. You can sign up to get daily readings in your email’s inbox or use their app. I love the app and recently benefitted from the Lent reading plans leading up to Easter. You can choose from topical studies like “Hospitality” or “Justice” to book reading plans. I’m currently using their reading plan to go through Proverbs.

Pray As You Go

When I don’t have time to sit down and read I love to listen to my Pray As You Go app. The app is an audio experience that always opens with beautiful sacred music. Scripture is read and there is a little devotional thought for the day. It’s almost like spending ten or fifteen minutes in a beautiful cathedral!

The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions

This collection of Puritan prayers can give shape to my own prayers when I don’t have the headspace to form them. Like this excerpt from one of the most recent prayers I read:

“Grant me never to lose sight of
the exceeding sinfulness of sin,
the exceeding righteousness of salvation,
the exceeding glory of Christ,
the exceeding beauty of holiness,
the exceeding wonder of grace.”

These have all been tools to help me worship and grow in God’s truth, love, and grace. There’s not one way to “do devotions,” and different seasons of life may not allow me the time sit down and read a chapter of God’s Word every day for an hour. That doesn’t mean it’s any less important or life-giving. I’m thankful for the many different and creative ways I can experience scripture whether it’s through the pages of my Bible or an app on my phone.

Blessings,

Danielle Ayers-Jones (with Ruth Schwenk)
